Day 14: Deep Fried Kool-Aid and Deep Fried Bubble Gum

December 23, 2012 By: Bearded Lady Category: Uncategorized

Over the past four years, we’ve had the chance to sample some of the latest, greatest and strangest fair food to come to the N.C. State Fair. In the spirit of year-end lists, we thought we would look back at 15 of our favorite food-related posts from the past four years. Each day between now and Christmas, we’ll post a different food review from our archives.

14. Deep Fried Ambassador: Kool-Aid & bubble gum preview (2011)

This is a guest blogger post by our Official Deep Fried Ambassador, Amy. We’ll be reposting her State Fair adventures from The Practical Cook blog throughout the Fair.

Gentle Readers, good news, The Practical Cook is not under a Deep Fried Embargo: she can tell you what is frying at the 2011 N.C. State Fair! Prepare to return to the days of Saturday morning cartoons (at least for me), it’s Deep-Fried Kool-Aid and Bubble Gum, with a side of Lemon Sticks. Wow, let’s get started, shall we?

Yeah, I think there are tickets available.
Yeah, I think there are tickets available.

First came the update on what’s new at the fair. Good news, more family-focused rides, and more rides in general. Perfect stops between snacks or more opportunities to lose your fried, depending on your level of tolerance.

Deep Fried Warmup with Murphy House Fried Chicken (and salad!): Awesome!!

Second we learned that there are more entries in almost every category. That’s basically more fair for your buck, think about it. Just good basic math at work there. So you’ll need a plan of attack, and possibly a buddy system. For the plan, download the N.C. State Fair App (called the Food & Fun Finder, yes please).

Day 13: Fried Food

13. Deep Fried Ambassador: Fried Food Edition (2010)

This is a guest blogger post by our Official Deep Fried Ambassador, Ashlee. We’ll be reposting her State Fair adventures from her Miss Ashlee blog throughout the Fair.

Fried Food Update

So tasty…
so good…
I love fair food!
But you know what??
I’ve been kind of taking it easy…
I’ve only had (and that’s often with sharing)
a turkey leg & corn dog

an ostrich burger

deep fried cookie dough

deep fried pickles & deep fried tomatoes

an apple (really who does that?)

deep fried pumpkin pie

French Fried Friend with the Deep Fried Pumpkin Pie before we dig in!
You can find this fabulous fried treat on the east side of Dorton Arena at a
place called “Gobblin’ Gourmet”. This is also where you find gourmet
funnel cakes! Oh… and how did we find this out?? Using the app of course!!

a Kool-aid pickle

and some honey sticks (clover’s my favorite!)

I’m feeling fine, but who wants a Deep Fried Ambassador that watches her figure!?!?!
But the honest truth is that I just don’t know if I have enough guts to try the Krispy Kreme Cheeseburger! I watched Bearded Lady do it and was all sorts of impressed, but I just don’t know if I can handle it!
So… I’m leaving my fate up to the Facebook Fans of the NC State Fair!
If this post gets 100 ‘likes’ by Friday night,
I’ll do it!
Ugh.
I’ll do it!

Day 12: Reptile on a Stick

In the spirit of year-end lists, we thought we would look back at 15 of our favorite food-related posts from the past four years. Each day between now and Christmas, we’ll post a different food review from our archives.

12. Deep Fried Ambassador update: Reptile on a stick (2009)

(This is part 4 of the “Whole Lotta Loony” series chronicling the adventures of your Deep-Fried Ambassador and Deputy Deep-Fried at the North Carolina State Fair.)

Is it possible that all state fair food could be described as weird?  I mean, most of it is stuff we don’t normally eat in our daily lives, except for that one magical week of the year when diets and scales go out the window.

But I think some fair food is stranger than others. Like side meat. What exactly is that? Guess I’m not southern enough. Also ostrich. I hope I don’t offend anyone, especially not a farmer, but I don’t think I’ll ever taste ostrich.

For my deep-fried challenge with the Deputy, though, I had to bite the bullet (or the strange meat on a stick, as it turns out) and try a new, weird food at this year’s fair.

Our dish of choice? Alligator tail.

I can’t believe I’m writing this, but it was delicious with a capital D. For real.

It tasted like a cross between chicken and pork chop. A little tough. Good thing it came on a stick. Easier to eat that way. And it was coated in a spicy batter and fried to perfection. The dipping sauce had a kick, too. Yum.

We also sampled Woody’s deep-fried buffalo chicken rangoons. Double-yum. And ended the night with a deep-fried Reese’s cup. And maybe some mini-donuts. But, who’s counting?

Up next: Rock and the not-so-haunted house.

Meet our State Fair Street Team: Deep Fried GRITS!

October 02, 2012 By: Bearded Lady Category: 2012 N.C. State Fair

This year, we opened up our Deep Fried Ambassador contest to a trio of fair fanatics. We received a lot of great entries from families, co-workers and friends. Thanks again to everyone who sent us an entry to become the 2012 State Fair Street Team. In the end, we could only pick one team to represent the fair this year, and that team was Deep Fried GRITS! (Girls Raised in the South).

Deep Fried GRITS! is made up of a mother, Helen,  and her two adult daughters, Annie and Ali. Together they will cover the fair through a blog, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and other online outlets.

For first place, the trio wins:

  • A Bumper Crop of Fun prize pack with T-shirts, posters and any other State Fair swag we can find in our office.
  • Each team member will receive a media badge and parking pass, giving them behind-the-scenes access to the N.C. State Fair.
  • Teams also will be invited to be honorary members of the Deep Fried Crew at the official Media Lunch at the N.C. State Fair, Monday, Oct. 8.

Congratulations to Helen, Annie and Ali. We look forward to working with you this fair. You’ll join the distinguished company of our Deep Fried Ambassadors, Suzanne, Ashlee and Amy.

Thanks again to everyone who entered. We hope you will all share your fair stories with us this year.

Do you want to be our State Fair Street Team?

September 19, 2012 By: Bearded Lady Category: 2012 N.C. State Fair

For the past three years, we’ve selected one fair fanatic to serve as our Deep Fried Ambassador during the State Fair. These bloggers were amazing, and we thank them for adding a new perspective to the fair. This year, we’re opening up a few more spots.

We realize not all of our fans are bloggers. Some are really active on Twitter and Facebook. Others create their own food reviews on YouTube. And others are using new sites, such as Pinterest to share their interests with friends.

This year, we’re doing away with the Deep Fried Ambassador and introducing the State Fair Street Team. We’re looking for a trio of friends, family or co-workers to tackle the challenge of covering the fair. Read on for more details.

Here’s how it works:

  • Assemble your team of three. Teams can consist of family, friends, co-workers or even strangers, as long as they love the fair.
  • Come up with an awesome team name.
  • Once you have your team assembled and named, send us your team creed outlining:
    • Why you love the N.C. State Fair.
    • What you would cover if your team was selected.
    • How you would cover the fair (blog, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, etc.)
    • Email your team creed to ncstatefair@gmail.com by Monday, Oct. 1, at 5 p.m.
    • We’ll pick a winner Tuesday, Oct. 2.

Winners will receive:

  • A Bumper Crop of Fun prize pack with T-shirts, posters and any other State Fair swag we can find in our office.
  • Each team member will receive a media badge and parking pass, giving them behind-the-scenes access to the N.C. State Fair.
  • Teams also will be invited to be honorary members of the Deep Fried Crew at the official Media Lunch at the N.C. State Fair, Monday, Oct. 8.

So, what are you waiting for? Assemble your team today!

Deep Fried Ambassador: Deep Fried is Fun. Hunger is Not.

Deep Fried Is Fun, Hunger Is Not: Hunger Relief Day at the N.C. State Fair (with video)

Gentle Readers, we’re going to change things up a bit today and address a problem that affects us all, hunger. The Practical Cook was raised in a farming family whose goal was to feed anyone who came through the door, and that still stands true. There’s an easy way to help on Thursday, October 20, 2011: bring 4 cans of Food Lion brand food to exchange for 1 free admission ticket to the N.C. State Fair.

If you’re a food fan like me, it’s one more way to enjoy the N.C. State Fair: stop and reflect on the hard work put into food production and bringing the good stuff to the table. For those reading this blog outside of N.C., I encourage you to find ways to give in your community. If you’re not going to the fair but still want to contribute, visit Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina for more ways to give back.

Roll the tape:

So give a little, get a whole lot. Once you’re inside the fair, this is waiting on you:

So thanks for listening to this Deep-Fried-with-a-Purpose Message. Hunger is a problem we can do something about.

Are you planning on coming to Hunger Relief Day at the Fair? (It’s one of the most popular, so plan ahead!) Post a comment below, or Tweet with the #ncstatefair hashtag.

Deep Fried Ambassador: Low-Cost and No-Cost

Low-Cost and No-Cost: The Practical Cook’s Guide to Attending the Fair on a Budget (with video)

The Practical Cook is thrilled to announce that aside from a bit of sunburn (one Gentle Reader referred to TPC’s complexion by way of a popular pork slogan, ahem), yesterday’s adventure with the Juniors went swimmingly. As the Juniors were bankrolling part of their own trip, it’s the perfect time to discuss attending the fair on a budget. Thanks for the Facebook and Twitter questions on the subject as well.

All we are saying, is give @NCPig a chance.
All we are saying, is give @NCPig a chance.

Let it be known, I am The Practical Cook for a good reason. I am Depression-era at heart, and my father could one-up Homer Simpson in his quest for free samples, so these are applied tactics, not just suggestions.

Roll the tape of low-cost ideas and Fried reporting from some thrifty pals, because really, should you put a price tag on world peace?

Number one thing I’ll do differently next year: buy ride tickets in advance. My friend, the wily @convertiblelife taught me that one.

Straight from Mt. Olive to you, that's a lotta pickle for cheap!

Low-Cost Fair Activities:

  • Food: 50 cents gets you a pickle or a sampler size of chocolate-covered peanuts in the Education/Commercial buildings. Well worth it. Ham biscuits are $2 on church row. While we’re on pig, Pork Chop Shop and Pik-N-Pig both do barbecue sammies at a good price, with slaw (see: vegetable). Fudge is also a good choice, because you can buy a little of it, and it’s satisfying.

Deep-Fried Legends of the Fair: Oreos, Krispy Kreme Burger, Elephant Ears (with video)

Gentle Readers, the people have spoken. Okay, a few people have spoken, and other people double-dog dared. Today’s dinner adventure at the N.C. State Fair was . . . Deep-Fried Oreos, Krispy Kreme Cheeseburger, and Corn, in that order.

Deep Fried Oreos!Deep Fried Oreos!

We got them here (on recommendation). Demand them Hot Now, they are infinitely better!

But the true legend has to be the Krispy Kreme Cheeseburger. I admit, I wasn’t up for the challenge yesterday, but hoping for deep-fried culinary diplomatic immunity, I went for it.

Day 1, N.C. State Fair Deep-Fried Review: Falafel and Reese’s Cups (with video)

Gentle Readers, it is way too late to be blogging, but sometimes, the good news must be shared. This evening I ate my dinner standing up, cruising the midway of the N.C. State Fair 2011, with a most excellent group of people from the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina. More on this great cause later in the week.

Falafel Stand!Falafel Stand!

Today’s news is about balancing healthy with not so much. For my main, I chose falafel. Portable, vegetable, delectable!

Falafel was made to be street food!

For my wise choice, I received a “I ate a salad at the fair.” So feeling most righteous, I proceeded here:

And ate this:
