Day 6: Miss Debbie’s Specialty Apples

December 15, 2012 By: Bearded Lady Category: Uncategorized

Over the past four years, we’ve had the chance to sample some of the latest, greatest and strangest fair food to come to the N.C. State Fair. In the spirit of year-end lists, we thought we would look back at 15 of our favorite food-related posts from the past four years. Each day between now and Christmas, we’ll post a different food review from our archives.

6. Sampling Miss Debbie’s specialty apples (2009)

Miss Debbie from Miss Debbie’s Specialty Apples was nice enough to let us sample some of her newest creations, the Pig Candy Apple, the Honkin’ Hog Apple and the Caramel Pecan Pie. You can taste these apples for yourself in the Commercial Building near Gate 11.

Here’s the details on the apples we sample in the video below:

  • Pig Candy Apple: Granny Smith Apple covered in caramel and dipped in white chocolate and covered in bacon and topped off with brown sugar and cinnamon.
  • Honkin’ Hog Apple: Same as the Pig Candy Apple, but with dark cholocate instead of white. (And yes, those ARE miniature plastic pigs on top of the Honkin’ Hog and Pig Candy apples. And no, you can’t eat them.)
  • Caramel Pecan Pie: Granny Smith apple covered in caramel then rolled in fresh pecans and then it is dipped in our homemade praline fudge.

The Scrumdiddlyumptious at Miss Debbie's

Granny Smith apple, dipped in caramel, rolled in toffee candy bits, dipped again in white chocolate, rolled in crushed Butterfinger candy, dipped AGAIN in rich, dark chocolate, rolled in semi-sweet chips, dipped again in chocolate, rolled in an array of nuts, topped with more chocolate and a specialty candy.

This comes from Miss Debbies’ Specialty Apples in the Commercial Building, just inside the atrium. Her booth is a candy apple lover’s dream, with more flavors than you can dream.

We are big fans of Miss Debbie’s apples. This year, we’ve sampled the Reese’s After Dark Mega Monster (caramel, chocolate, peanut butter and Reese’s cups), Spumoni (pistachios, white chocolate, Italian cream confection and maraschino cherries) and the Dark Chocolate Caramel Macchiato Mega Monster (chocolate and coffee flavored — What more do you need to know?).  YUM!

One of our co-workers says he buys a bunch of these apples and then freezes them and enjoys them throughout the year. That’s a great idea. But if you already visited the fair and didn’t try one of these apples, they do have a robust mail order business. What a great idea to send to someone who couldn’t come to the fair this year or a unique gift for anyone on your list. And best of all, they are a North Carolina business, hailing from Johnston County.

Willy Wonka would be proud indeed.

Deep Fried Ambassador update: How ’bout them apples?

Our Deep Fried Ambassador is busy blogging about all things N.C. State Fair related. We’ll re-post all of her Fair entries, but be sure to check out her Pretty*Swell blog.

How do I begin to describe Miss Debbie’s Specialty Apples?

Colossal. Decadent. Scrumptious.

With names like “The Ultimate Apple Super Extreme” and “Cashew Turtle Super Monster,” these apples are incredible. My husband, a candy-apple connoisseur, says that Miss Debbie’s apples are the best he’s ever tasted.

We shared a pecan pie apple this week (fresh Granny Smith coated in homemade caramel, dipped in a homemade pecan praline confection and rolled in pecan pieces and cookie crumble). Holy cow that thing was GOOD.

I chatted with Miss Debbie, and she’s as nice as can be. You’ll find her booth inside the Commercial and Education building. She also sells her amazing apples online.

Take your time. There are a bazillion choices. And I’d venture to guess that they’re all delicious.
