October 13, 2012 By: Bearded Lady Category: 2012 N.C. State Fair

Flying Bob and Bearded Lady review one of the new food attractions at the fair, Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls. The egg rolls are filled with finely chopped steak and cheese and covered in a sweet chili sauce. You can also get the sauce on the side. The Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls are available at Woody’s, located near the entrance to the Midway and church food booths. Is there anything better than icing and bacon? Turns out the answer is, "No. Nothing is better."

Each year, the Press Office hosts a pre-fair lunch for local media outlets. It’s a great opportunity to share what’s new at the fair. From the latest rides to newest grounds acts, we try to cover everything including the food. Today, Murphy House unveiled two new fair foods you’ll see this year – Deep Fried Cinnamon Rolls Covered in Bacon and Deep Fried Cupcakes.

Deep Fried Countdown: 10 days

October 01, 2012 By: Bearded Lady Category: 2012 N.C. State Fair, Uncategorized

We’re just 10 days out from the start of the 2012 N.C. State Fair. That’s right, just 10 days until the jaw-dropping rides, deep-fried delicacies and amazing agricultural exhibits. If you’re starting to plan your trip, we’ve got the following 10 tips to get you ready for the fair.

  1. Buy tickets in advance
Buying tickets in advance not only saves you money, but also saves time standing in line when you get to the fair. You can purchase your tickets online at www.ncstatefair.org or at nine area retail locations. If you like rides, make sure to buy your ride sheets in advance. You’ll end up saving nearly 50 percent. Also remember that you can still purchase your tickets online, even after Oct. 11. You might not save as much money after the gates open, but you can still save time by not having to stand in line.
  2. Preview the fair
While the official opening ceremony won’t be until Oct. 12, you can come and preview the fair on Thursday, Oct. 11. Enjoy a reduced gate admission and buy an unlimited-ride wristband for $28 on Preview Day only. In addition, we’ll also be kicking off the Dorton Arena concerts with the Varsity Vocal Showcase Presented by Mattress Firm. If you like “Glee” or the “Pitch Perfect“, you’ll enjoy this concert featuring five college a cappella groups. Tickets are $10 and all proceeds will be donated to the performing schools.
  3. Ride the bus
Why not avoid traffic headaches and take advantage of park and ride locations in Cary, Chapel Hill, Durham, Garner, Raleigh and RTP? You can leave your car behind, you won’t have to deal with traffic, and our dedicated bus lanes ensure you will get front-door service to the fair.
  4. Know your entertainers
We have more than 20 entertainers roaming and performing during the fair. From jugglers and clowns to musicians and stilt walkers. Take some time to enjoy at least one of these acts during your visit.
  5. Animal encounters
You’ve probably heard about some improvements at the fairgrounds, particularly around the livestock exhibits. The State Fair Study Commission recommended changes aimed at keeping people and competition livestock separated as much as is practical without prohibiting people from seeing animals. You will still be able to pet animals in the petting zoo, but changes will affect the traffic patterns within and around the Kelley and Graham buildings and Expo Center. In addition, visitors will see more hand washing stations across the fairgrounds.
  6. Scavenger Hunt
If you’re coming with a school group or just bringing your family, make sure you download a copy of the State Fair Scavenger Hunt. You can earn a ribbon just by exploring the fairgrounds and learning more about N.C. agriculture and the State Fair.
  7. Get in for free
Join us Thursday, Oct. 18, for Food Lion Hunger Relief Day at the State Fair. Bring four cans of Food Lion-brand food with you and get one free gate admission to the fair that day. All of the canned goods will be donated to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, which serves a 34-county area near Raleigh. Because the need is so great, we are encouraging fairgoers to bring more than four cans and help fill the Food Bank shelves.
  8. Get in the spirit
Check out the 2012 N.C. State Fair commercial. Share the video with your friends and get them in the State Fair spirit.
  9. Warm up your taste buds
We can’t confirm all the new foods you’ll find at the State Fair this year, but we have heard about a few new treats. Some of the latest deep-fried delicacies include Deep-Fried Girl Scout Cookies (specifically Samoas or Caramel deLights), Philly Cheese Steak Egg Rolls, and Pig Butt on a Stick.
  10. Connect with the State Fair

Team Bubble Gum or Team Kool-Aid?

October 10, 2011 By: Bearded Lady Category: 2011 N.C. State Fair

During today’s media lunch, reporters and guests were able to learn more about the new attractions at the fair. In addition to information about the latest exhibits, rides and entertainment, everyone was able to try three of the newest fair foods to hit the midway – deep-fried bubble gum, deep-fried Kool-Aid and lemon sticks.

Which deep-fried team are you, Team Bubble Gum or Team Kool-Aid?

Lemon sticks are simple, but refreshing treats at this year's State Fair.

While everyone enjoyed the lemon sticks, the deep-fried bubble gum and Kool-Aid caused some controversy. People seemed to be either pro bubble gum, or pro Kool-Aid.

Even in the press office, we couldn’t decide. Merrie Go Round, Flying Bob and Tilt-A-Whirl enjoyed the deep-fried Kool-Aid, a fried ball of dough mixed with Kool-Aid drink powder and topped with a fine combination of sugar and Kool-Aid powder. Here’s Merrie Go Round’s review:

Firecracker and I preferred the deep-fried bubble gum, which is actually a marshmallow, dipped in bubble gum batter and topped with bubble-gum flavored icing and Chiclets. Here’s our review filmed by the 2009 Deep Fried Ambassador Suzanne. Thanks, Suzanne:

Which side are you on, Team Bubble Gum or Team Kool-Aid? Try them both when the gates open Thursday at 3 p.m. for the 2011 N.C. State Fair. And, don’t forget you can save time and money by purchasing your tickets in advance. Find out more information at www.ncstatefair.org.

Deep Fried Review: Fried Frito Pie

October 17, 2010 By: Blue Ribbon Category: 2010 N.C. State Fair

My mouth has been watering in anticipation of tasting the Fried Frito Pie since I first heard it was going to be at the N.C. State Fair. I simply couldn’t resist this recipe description: Texas chili mixed with mild cheddar cheese, wrapped in Frito corn chips, then battered and fried. The dish comes with a side of salsa and sour cream.

Fried Frito Pie from Steph's Strawberries
Steph’s Strawberries, located near the Village of Yesteryear in front of the Rabbit Barn, serves up a large portion of the deep-fried treat.

New Food: BlueBird Cupcakes

October 16, 2010 By: Bearded Lady Category: 2010 N.C. State Fair

Cindy McGee graduated from N.C. State University in August facing a tough job market. Instead of giving up hope, she took her love of baking and started BlueBird Cupcakes, a gourmet cupcake business that is making its debut at the 2010 N.C. State Fair.

The sociology major turned baker offers seven varieties of cupcakes: Snickers, Pumpkin Spice, Caramel Apple, Red Velvet, S’mores, Very Vanilla and Maple Bacon. Cindy says she bakes around 300 cupcakes each night and goes home around midday to bake 300 more. Her dedication ensures that customers will get a quality cupcake no matter when they come to the Fair.

The Deep Fried Crew sampled all seven varieties yesterday. Find out which ones were our favorites in the video below.

You can find BlueBird Cupcakes in the Kerr Scott Building, and don’t forget to use our food, ride and exhibit finders to plan your trip to the Fair.

Krispy Kreme Burger: I can’t believe I ate the whole thing

October 15, 2010 By: Bearded Lady Category: 2010 N.C. State Fair

You should know that we walk a lot during the Fair. On average, around five miles a day. I know that doesn’t make up for what I did today because today I ate a Krispy Kreme bacon cheeseburger. That’s right, a hamburger patty, cheese and bacon between two Krispy Kreme doughnuts. You can find the Krispy Kreme burger at several locations around the Fair (use the new food finder to see them all). I tried the Murphy House’s version, which is ironically topped with lettuce and tomato.

Watch the video below to see how it went:
