Deep Fried Countdown: 10 days

October 01, 2012 By: Bearded Lady Category: 2012 N.C. State Fair, Uncategorized

We’re just 10 days out from the start of the 2012 N.C. State Fair. That’s right, just 10 days until the jaw-dropping rides, deep-fried delicacies and amazing agricultural exhibits. If you’re starting to plan your trip, we’ve got the following 10 tips to get you ready for the fair.

  1. Buy tickets in advance
Buying tickets in advance not only saves you money, but also saves time standing in line when you get to the fair. You can purchase your tickets online at or at nine area retail locations. If you like rides, make sure to buy your ride sheets in advance. You’ll end up saving nearly 50 percent. Also remember that you can still purchase your tickets online, even after Oct. 11. You might not save as much money after the gates open, but you can still save time by not having to stand in line.
  2. Preview the fair
While the official opening ceremony won’t be until Oct. 12, you can come and preview the fair on Thursday, Oct. 11. Enjoy a reduced gate admission and buy an unlimited-ride wristband for $28 on Preview Day only. In addition, we’ll also be kicking off the Dorton Arena concerts with the Varsity Vocal Showcase Presented by Mattress Firm. If you like “Glee” or the “Pitch Perfect“, you’ll enjoy this concert featuring five college a cappella groups. Tickets are $10 and all proceeds will be donated to the performing schools.
  3. Ride the bus
Why not avoid traffic headaches and take advantage of park and ride locations in Cary, Chapel Hill, Durham, Garner, Raleigh and RTP? You can leave your car behind, you won’t have to deal with traffic, and our dedicated bus lanes ensure you will get front-door service to the fair.
  4. Know your entertainers
We have more than 20 entertainers roaming and performing during the fair. From jugglers and clowns to musicians and stilt walkers. Take some time to enjoy at least one of these acts during your visit.
  5. Animal encounters
You’ve probably heard about some improvements at the fairgrounds, particularly around the livestock exhibits. The State Fair Study Commission recommended changes aimed at keeping people and competition livestock separated as much as is practical without prohibiting people from seeing animals. You will still be able to pet animals in the petting zoo, but changes will affect the traffic patterns within and around the Kelley and Graham buildings and Expo Center. In addition, visitors will see more hand washing stations across the fairgrounds.
  6. Scavenger Hunt
If you’re coming with a school group or just bringing your family, make sure you download a copy of the State Fair Scavenger Hunt. You can earn a ribbon just by exploring the fairgrounds and learning more about N.C. agriculture and the State Fair.
  7. Get in for free
Join us Thursday, Oct. 18, for Food Lion Hunger Relief Day at the State Fair. Bring four cans of Food Lion-brand food with you and get one free gate admission to the fair that day. All of the canned goods will be donated to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, which serves a 34-county area near Raleigh. Because the need is so great, we are encouraging fairgoers to bring more than four cans and help fill the Food Bank shelves.
  8. Get in the spirit
Check out the 2012 N.C. State Fair commercial. Share the video with your friends and get them in the State Fair spirit.
  9. Warm up your taste buds
We can’t confirm all the new foods you’ll find at the State Fair this year, but we have heard about a few new treats. Some of the latest deep-fried delicacies include Deep-Fried Girl Scout Cookies (specifically Samoas or Caramel deLights), Philly Cheese Steak Egg Rolls, and Pig Butt on a Stick.
  10. Connect with the State Fair
Need help finding your favorite ride or food on the fairgrounds? Stay tuned for updates on the latest version of the N.C. State Fair app. In the meantime, feel free to ask us questions on Facebook and Twitter.

  • Use the clues to complete an online game card by Thursday, Oct. 7.

  • The top two teams from that scavenger hunt will go head-to-head in a Fair-related trivia contest hosted by Subway’s Jared Fogle for a chance to win a trip to New York City to watch Jared compete in the NYC Marathon.

If you’d like to race around the fairgrounds and win a free trip to New York, then make sure you submit all five clues by this Thursday. The final clue is below.

Don’t miss your chance to win the Great Fair-A-Thon Challenge

September 27, 2010 By: Bearded Lady Category: 2010 N.C. State Fair

In case you missed the big announcement, we’re partnering with Subway during this year’s State Fair to offer a free trip for two to New York City. After Pants Dance Revolution and the $5 Footlong Song Challenge, we decided it was time to take things to another level. That’s why we recently announced the Great Fair-A-Thon Challenge. The contest has three stages of competition, but if you make it to the finish line you can win a two-day trip to New York City to watch Jared Fogle, the Subway guy, compete in the New York City Marathon.

The first stage of the race, a virtual scavenger hunt, is already under way. We’ve hidden clues on the Deep Fried blog and across our other social media sites. You might even find a clue at your neighborhood Subway. Visit for more details and hints on the locations of your next clues. Once you find all the clues, be sure to complete your virtual scavenger hunt game card (available Monday, Oct. 4) and submit it online by the deadline (Thursday, Oct. 7).

On Oct. 8, we’ll announce the winners who will advance to compete in an actual scavenger hunt at the N.C. State Fair on Oct. 19. Those contestants will have a chance to meet the Deep Fried crew and Jared Fogle, and possibly walk away with a trip for two to New York City. If you think you have what it takes to win, check out the contest website today.

Announcing the 2010 Deep Fried Triangle Tweetup at the N.C. State Fair

September 14, 2010 By: Bearded Lady Category: 2010 N.C. State Fair

We had so much fun getting to meet our tweeps in person during last year’s Deep Fried Triangle Tweetup at the N.C. State Fair that we decided to do it all again. This time, we’re moving the celebration to the very first day of the Fair to offer you a first glimpse at the rides, food and entertainment you can expect at the Fair.

The Deep Fried Triangle Tweetup, co-hosted with OurHashtag, will be held on Preview Day, Thursday, Oct. 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Folk Festival tent at the N.C. State Fair. We’re happy to announce that we’re also teaming up with TriOut and Freezerburns this year for an even larger celebration. Check out the video below as Gregory Ng, Wayne Sutton and Ryan Boyles help Firecracker and Bearded Lady announce the event:

Note: If video doesn’t play, try refreshing browser.

Come out early (gates open at 3 p.m.) and explore the fairgrounds with TriOut’s custom scavenger hunt. Check in at locations around the Fair to earn virtual badges and actual prizes. During the Deep Fried Tweetup, you’ll be able to interact with Fair entertainers, sample the latest deep-fried creations and enter raffles for other great prizes. We’ll end the night with a special Freezerburns Live show. Frozen-food master Gregory Ng will be on-hand to compare Fair food with its frozen counterpart.

Tickets for the event are only $5, which includes admission to the Fair on Oct. 14. Space is limited to the first 300 registrants. Follow this link to purchase your ticket and register for the event today, and check back for more details as we get closer to the event. Details behind the Tweetup: #deepfriedhunt edition

October 19, 2009 By: Cotton Candy Category: 2009 N.C. State Fair

As we get closer and closer to the Deep Fried Triangle Tweetup, we wanted to give you a little more information on what you can expect at the event beyond lots of tweeting, lots of friends and lots of N.C. State Fair lovers.

The Deep Fried Triangle Tweetup is upon us, and we are busy getting all of the final details in place. We have lots of fun stuff planned for the Folk Festival tent (including artists and entertainers who will be there, the awesome food you’ll be able to sample and the deep-fried Tweetup Badges we’ll have for the first 250 attendees), but we also have one adventure planned for tweeps outside of the tweetup’s home base.

We’ll have a Twitter-themed scavenger hunt that will take you up, down and around the fairgrounds in search of Twitter-related attractions, stops and hidden treasures. The #deepfriedhunt will have 10 stops, but you’ll only be required to complete five of the tasks. Once you complete the hunt, you’ll have until 9:30 p.m. Thursday night to head back to the Folk Festival tent to receive your prize, a 2009 N.C. State Fair T-shirt modeled off of our vintage-inspired Web site and posters:

Complete our deep-fried, Twitter-themed scavenger hunt and this bad boy is yours.

Complete our deep-fried, Twitter-themed scavenger hunt and this bad boy is yours.

Here are just a few samples of things we’ll have you searching for:

  • A Fail Whale’s second cousin on the Midway
  • The Twitter bird’s home on the fairgrounds, if it were to compete in the livestock shows
  • The blue-ribbon opposite of #FAIL
  • A recycled, environmentally friendly tweet

Does that get you curious? We’ll have more clues, of course, for you at registration, in both a paper format and an online format. We’ll have a mix of tasks (for example, some stops may have a picture option for scavenger hunters with camera phones) so everyone can get in on the fun, and all of the stops will require you to tweet out an answer marked with the hashtag #deepfriedhunt. We’ll use that to keep up with our scavenger hunt tweeps across the fairgrounds.

Be sure to register for the Deep Fried Triangle Tweetup to get in on the fun. Also, since we’re in deep-fried crunch time before the tweetup, check back tomorrow and Wednesday for your remaining round-up of details, including the Techy edition and Swag edition. Stay tuned!
